what exactly is organic social media?
Organic social media is everything your business posts without paying the platform to distribute it.
Think:
Photos
Reels and videos
Product updates/education
Customer stories/Company News
This is where the SOCIAL part of social media comes in.
Good organic content helps people get to know your business. It keeps your brand active, gives customers something to interact with and helps build familiarity over time. And despite what you may have heard, your organic content is not limited to your existing followers. Good Reels, shared posts and recommended content can absolutely reach new people.
The catch?
You don’t have much control over who sees it.
You can create a fantastic post, hit publish and hope the right people find it.
Sometimes they do.
And sometimes the masterpiece you posted gets 14 likes and a comment from your aunt 😂
That’s SOCIAL MEDIA
How is paid advertising different?
Paid advertising gives you much more control over who you are trying to reach and what you want them to do. Instead of simply publishing content and hoping the right customer comes across it, you can build a campaign around a specific audience, offer or business objective.
Depending on the campaign, you may be able to build audiences around things such as:
Geographic location
Age ranges
Interests
People who have interacted with your business
Previous website visitors
Existing customer audiences
Audiences with similar interests
For example:
A farm equipment dealership could promote a seasonal product to customers within a specific region or sales territory.
A business could promote an upcoming special event to people who match the right interests, age range, or location.
A retailer could reconnect with people who visited its website but didn’t make a purchase.
The difference is pretty simple:
🌱 Organic social helps build your presence.
🚀 Paid advertising helps intentionally expand it.
🤝 Together, they help attract the right audience and turn attention into familiarity, trust, and action.
That’s usually where the magic happens. ✨
When should you actually run an ad?
This is where a lot of businesses get stuck
Running advertising because “We should probably be doing ads” isn’t really a strategy 😅 Advertising tends to work best when there is a clear reason for someone to see the campaign and a clear action you want them to take.
Here are some of the situations where paid advertising can make a lot of sense.
You’re launching something new
New product. New service. New location. Your existing followers are only part of the potential market. Advertising can help introduce that launch to people who may never have heard of your business before.
You have a promotion or seasonal offer
A limited-time promotion gives people a reason to pay attention and, more importantly, a reason to act now.
Instead of simply saying: “Here’s our business again.”
You’re giving them something timely and relevant: “Here’s something you may be interested in, and there’s a reason to check it out now.”
You’re entering a new market
Expanding into a new town, region or sales territory? Paid advertising can help introduce your business to people who may have absolutely no reason to know you exist yet.
You want more leads
Advertising doesn’t have to be about likes. A campaign can be structured around actions such as:
Request a quote.
Book an appointment.
Contact us.
Visit the website.
That’s where advertising starts moving from “marketing activity” toward an actual business objective.
You already have content that’s working
Sometimes the best ad idea is already sitting on your page. If a particular Reel, customer story or product post is already performing well organically, it may be worth looking at whether paid promotion could help that content reach a larger relevant audience.
“You don’t always need to reinvent the wheel.”
When should you not run ads?
This part matters too. Paid advertising isn’t automatically the answer. If you can’t answer these four questions:
Who are we trying to reach?
What are we promoting?
Why should they care?
What do we want them to do next?
…then spending money probably shouldn’t be step one.
And there’s another piece businesses sometimes overlook. What happens after the click? If you spend money driving customers to a confusing website, an unanswered phone, a broken form, or an inbox that nobody checks, then paid advertising may be the wrong solution.
A click is only the start. If the next step is confusing, slow, or broken, you’re paying for attention you may never convert into a customer.
Facebook or Instagram ADS?
This is one of the questions we hear most often. Should you advertise on Facebook? Instagram? Both? The answer depends on your audience.
Instagram continues to skew younger. In Pew Research Center’s 2026 international survey, Instagram use had a median of 77% among adults aged 18–34, compared with 29% among adults 50 and older across the countries surveyed. Facebook was more evenly distributed, with median usage of 78% among ages 18–34, 74% among ages 35–49 and 59% among adults 50+. Pew Research Center
That doesn’t mean:
Young customer = Instagram
Older customer = Facebook
It’s just one factor.
Instagram can be particularly strong for:
Highly visual products
Reels and short-form video
Lifestyle brands
Tourism
Food and beverage
Events
Facebook can be particularly useful for:
Local businesses
Retail and service-based businesses
Community-focused companies
Professional services
Do you have to choose one? 🤷
Not necessarily. In most cases, the better approach is to start with two simple questions:
Who are we trying to reach?
What are we trying to accomplish?
From there, you can test both platforms and see how people actually respond. Instagram may drive stronger video engagement, while Facebook may generate more inquiries. Or the opposite could happen. That’s why choosing a platform simply because you personally use it isn’t much of a media strategy. Your customer should get a vote too.
the bigger picture
The goal isn’t to run ads just for the sake of running ads. It’s to understand where paid advertising fits into the bigger picture.
At Skyactive Creative, we believe organic content, paid campaigns, and the customer experience should all work together to move people from awareness to action.
